midweek music: “The Genetic Method”

On New Year’s Eve 1971, The Band played a concert at New York’s Academy of Music, one of four shows they did to finish off a residency at the Academy they did that year. As a lead-in to one of their signature songs, “Chest Fever,” organist Garth Hudson would noodle about a bit on the organ, and on this particular evening, “The Genetic Method” started a bit before midnight. When the clock struck twelve and 1972 began (at the 6.06 mark), Hudson commemorated the occasion delightfully……
