guide to the KRAD COVID readings

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S. in March 2020, I decided to do my bit to help folks who were forced to stay at home because of the novel coronavirus by doing readings of my short fiction.

KRAD COVID readings” now has more than a hundred subscribers. For 2020, I generally did three readings a week, one each on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, then cut back to one a week every Tuesday in 2021. Here’s a guide to them, which will be regularly updated:

me reading from Alien: Isolation

Over 4th of July weekend, the fine folks at InConJunction — an Indianapolis convention that I’ve been both guest of honor and toastmaster at — held InConStasis, a virtual con to substitute for the actual InCon while we’re all trying to stay safe from COVID-19.

My part of it included a reading from my 2019 novel Alien: Isolation, and here it is now for your viewing pleasure! This bit has Amanda Ripley watching footage of an incident on the ship Sotillo involving her mother Ellen Ripley……

check out the entire “Day of Honor” event!

The entire “Day of Honor” event is now available on Twitch TV. It includes all five panels:

  • Modiphius: Star Trek Adventures Klingon Empire Core Rulebook talk with special guest Rick Sternbach, writers Derek Tyler Attico, Keith R.A. DeCandido (that’s me!), and Kelli Fitzpatrick, and Modiphius folk Chris Birch, Nathan Dowdell, Jim Johnson, and Sam Webb.
  • Hero Collector: the ships of Star Trek Online with STO‘s Thomas Marrone and Hector Ortiz and HC’s John Ainsworth and Chris Thompson.
  • Streampunks: Blood of the Void: game master Eric Campbell discusses the TTRPG with the players/actors Christopher Eddins, Phillip Jeanmarie, Jade Law, Aliza Pearl, and Quincy Surasmith.
  • Star Trek Online: talking about the new “House Divided” release with actors J.G. Hertzler (Martok) and Robert O’Reilly (Gowron), as well as STO‘s Scott Boyd, Mike Fatum, Thomas Marrone, and Al Rivera.
  • “Klingon Culture and You”: talking about portraying Klingons hosted by Aliza Pearl and featuring a bunch of folks from Star Trek Discovery: actors Jayne Brook (Admiral Cornwell), Mary Chieffo (L’Rell), Clare McConnell (Dennas), Kenneth Mitchell (Kol), and David Benjamin Tomlinson (Or’eq), Klingon dialect/voice coach Rea Nolan, and Klingon translator Robyn Stewart.

Check it out! (I tried to embed the video, but it didn’t work for some reason, so here’s a direct link to the Twitch TV page.)

on sale now: Bad Ass Moms

Ecald5sWkAAXgWj

After a most successful crowdfund, Bad Ass Moms is now on sale from Crazy 8 Press. It was originally intended to launch at Shore Leave 42 this weekend, but instead it will be out the same weekend as the virtual Shore Leave 41.5.

You can order the book from pretty much any online dealer — Amazon (Kindle or trade paperback), Barnes & Noble, Apple, Kobo, Angus & Robertson, Monadori, and Vivlio.

Editor Mary Fan did a bunch of nifty little promo illustrations for several of the stories — the one for my own “Materfamilias” is above.

Here’s the full table of contents of these stories about mothers who kick some serious butt:

  • “Ruth” by Michael Jan Friedman
  • “Raising the Dead” by Hildy Silverman
  • “What We Bring with Us” by Derek Tyler Attico
  • “The Songbird and Her Cage” by Joanna Schnurman
  • “Hellbeans” by Jenifer Purcell Rosenberg
  • “Krysta, Warrior President” by Peter David
  • “Did They Do That?” by Denise Sutton
  • “Mama Bear” by Danielle Ackley-McPhail
  • “Jupiter Justice” by Kris Katzen
  • “The Devil You Knew: A Scoubidou Mystery” by Glenn Hauman
  • “Mr. EB’s Organic Sideshow” by Paige Daniels
  • “Materfamilias” by Keith R.A. DeCandido
  • “Pride Fight” by T.E. Bakutis
  • “Perfect Insanity” by T.J. Perkins
  • “The Art of Crafting Resistance” by Karissa Laurel
  • “The Hardwicke Files: The Case of the Full Moon” by Russ Colchamiro
  • “Come In, Sit Down, Have a Bite!” by Paul Kupperberg
  • “Shape Up, or Ship Out” by Heather E. Hutsell
  • “Shoot Center” by Robert Greenberger
  • “She’s a Real Cougar” by Kathleen O’Shea David
  • “DuckBob in: Running Hot” by Aaron Rosenberg
  • “On Moonlit Wings” by Mary Fan

I’ve had the pleasure of reading a couple of the stories in this anthology, and am very much looking forward to reading the rest of it! Mighty Mary Fan is not only the editor of the book, she also wrote the closing story, which is one of the ones I have read, and it’s a magnificent piece of work.

KRAD COVID readings #42: “Love Over and Over”

We conclude our week of tales of Cassie Zukav, weirdness magnet — my cycle of urban fantasy stories set in Key West — with “Love Over and Over,” a story I wrote for the 2013 collection Ragnarok and Roll: Tales of Cassie Zukav, Weirdness Magnet. It chronicles the tumultuous relationship between Loki and Sigyn over the centuries.

my review of Warrior Nun

WarriorNun02

On Tor.com, I review the first season of Warrior Nun, the new Netflix series based on the 1990s comic book Warrior Nun Areala, created by Ben Dunn. It’s a very good show, but it falls short of greatness due to an overreliance on two very tired tropes.

An excerpt:

The absolute best episode of the season is the sixth one, which only features Mary and Ava (plus a brief appearance by Beatrice) among the main cast. It’s a brilliant two-person play, one that gives Mary an opportunity to show Ava what the OCS fights for, what being the Warrior Nun means, and also for them to banter and snark, which both Turner and Baptista do splendidly. It’s one of two episodes written by the great Amy Berg (Leverage, Eureka, Person of Interest, Da Vinci’s Demons), and she just kills it. On top of that, the episode mostly takes place in a small, very old town in Spain, and the scenery (which is superlative throughout—the show makes phenomenal use of Spanish locations) is magnificent, the town a charming delight that reminded me favorably of the trip my wife and I took to Italy in 2018 where we toured a bunch of towns in Tuscany very much like the town in this episode.

Friday fanfare: “Endicott”

Kid Creole and the Coconuts was formed by fellow Bronx native August Darnell in 1980, and they do a lovely mix of Caribbean, big-band, and blues. (Cab Calloway once sang their praises as the closest to his own style in what was then modern times.) Here’s their biggest hit, the delightful “Endicott.”

Star Trek: Voyager Rewatch: “Remember”

voyager-rewatch-series-header

Torres starts having incredibly vivid dreams about being an Enaran — the same species as a bunch of passengers Voyager is ferrying home. Those dreams reveal a very ugly truth about the Enaran people. The Star Trek: Voyager Rewatch tries to “Remember.”

An excerpt:

I want to like this episode a lot more than I do. When I was watching it, I was very much into it, at least for most of the episode’s run-time, and fully expected to say nice things, and then I got to the climax and it all kinda fell apart, and I finished the episode being annoyed by it and fully expecting to write a scathing review, and then I wrote the plot summary and remembered all that was good about it.

Sigh.

midweek music: “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes”

One of the best things about the Graceland album is that it introduced the world to Ladysmith Black Mambazo, a South African a cappella band that was already hugely popular at home, and became popular everywhere. The group is still together, though founder Josepha Shabalala died earlier this year.

Ladysmith was featured prominently on two songs, “Homeless” and “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes,” and here’s a performance of the latter from 2007 when Simon was awarded the first-ever Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, which not only shows off Ladysmith’s vocal talent, but also their superlative dancing.

KRAD COVID readings #41: “Undine the Boardwalk”

When Danielle Ackley-McPhail invited me to contribute to the fourth Bad-Ass Faeries anthology, It’s Elemental, I had just finished writing “Ragnarok and Roll” for Tales from the House Band Volume 1, and I wanted to do more stories like that one that featured a young weirdness magnet named Cassie Zukav. So I did something with a water fae. The result is “Undine the Boardwalk,” the second of my three Cassie tales this week.
